Nissenbaum Family Foundation

The Nissenbaum Family Foundation was founded in 1983 with the aim of rescuing testimonies and Jewish heritage in Poland – the first foundation to be established in Poland since the Second World War. For years its activity concentrated on the restoration and protection of Jewish cemeteries as well as the commemoration of sites of Jewish struggle and martyrdom within the present-day borders of Poland. One of the Foundation’s chief aims is also to educate young people in a spirit of dialogue and respect for Jewish spiritual and material heritage.
The Nissenbaum Family Foundation has given its support to the Museum’s educational programs. The Foundation’s contribution will allow the Museum to launch a new initiative – the PIYE International Summer School – whose purpose will be to introduce young people from Poland, Israel and Germany to the Museum’s mission and values. The project will be an extension of the Polish Intercultural Youth Encounters (PIYE) project, an exchange program for students from Poland and Israel successfully run by the Museum and the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute of Poland since 2006. The PIYE International Summer School will be a cyclical event – five editions are planned within the framework of the Nissenbaum Family Educational Fund between 2015 and 2019. The Nissenbaum Family Foundation also supports the production of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews Core Exhibition.

“The Foundation honors the activity of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews and wants to support the creation of the exhibition devoted to the thousand-year history of the Jewish community in Poland. In order to fill the Museum with life, the Foundation gladly takes part in organizing presentations and meetings. In particular, young people from Poland, Israel and Germany will be able to get to know the rich cultural heritage of the Jewish community in Poland.”
Sonja Nissenbaum, President of the Foundation
