The project implemented by the Jewish Cemeteries Documentation Foundation focuses on creating an online database of inscriptions from tombstones located in Jewish cemeteries in Żabno, Szczucin, Dąbrowa Tarnowska, Staszów, Wiślica, Busko, Chmielnik, Szydłów, Opatów, and Iwaniska. Its aim is to produce digital photographs of all matzevot, record and translate the inscriptions they bear, and make these materials available through the Foundation’s publicly accessible online platform, where they will be published together with GPS location data and a searchable index of individuals.
The project is addressed both to descendants of those buried in these cemeteries and to genealogists, historians, teachers, guides, and local communities. Fieldwork will include photographic documentation and data collection, which will then be entered into the online database. The Foundation plans to share information about the project’s progress via social media and its website.
The outcome will be not only a digital database containing comprehensive documentation of the tombstones, but also increased historical awareness, the preservation of unique testimonies of Jewish culture, and their availability to researchers and all interested audiences.
