Statement on the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute

Subsequent to the dismissal of Ms. Monika Krawczyk from the position of Director of the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Board of the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute of Poland declares that it fully endorses the decision of the Ministry and welcomes appointment of Dr. Michał Trębacz for the position of acting Director of the Institute.

Dr. Michał Trębacz is an academic involved in the socio-political history of 20th century Jews for many years. Since 2017, he has served as the head of the Research Department of POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, responsible for the Museum’s largest project, Global Education Outreach Program (GEOP), which is supported by the Association. The mission of this program is to promote international studies on the history and culture of Polish Jews by supporting research and scientific exchange between world research centers. We are convinced that Dr. Trębacz’s experience in managing teams will enable him to resolve the conflict between the Institute’s employees and its management. Above all, we believe that he will prepare the Institute for new challenges, including the election of a new director of this institution via an open call.

Bearing in mind that one of the main goals of the Association is to ensure the proper protection of the collections deposited with the Institute, we are counting on close cooperation in that matter with the new acting Director, as well as with the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

On behalf of the Board of the Association,

 Piotr Wiślicki

President of the Board

Association of the Jewish Historical Institute of Poland
