Jan Jagielski

He graduated from the University of Warsaw with a Master of Science in geochemistry and mineralogy. He worked in the Institute of Industrial Chemistry as an academic researcher for 30 years. At the same time he was learning about preserved objects/items of the material culture of Polish Jews.
In 1981 he was one of the founders of the Social Committee for the Protection of Jewish Cemeteries and Cultural Monuments in Poland and since 1994 he has been holding the office of its Chairman. He became
a member of the Association of the JHI in 1985 and since 1990 he has occupied the position of the Secretary of the Board of the AJHI. In 1991 he began working on the development of the Register of Monuments Department in the JHI.
Mr. Jagielski is the author of numerous articles about Jewish cemeteries, co-author of Katalog Zachowanych Synagog w Polsce [Register of Extant Synagogues in Poland] and Niezatarte ślady Getta Warszawskiego [Indelible trails of the Warsaw Ghetto]. In 1998 he was awarded the Diploma of the Israeli Embassy for the preservation of Jewish cultural monuments in Poland. He is the 2005 winner of the Jan Karski and Pola Nireńska Prize and the 2009 winner of the Irena Sendlerowa Prize awarded by Taube Foundation.
