190 years of the White Stork Synagogue in Wrocław

Grant for ‘Pro Arte 2002’ Foundation for the project: ‘190 years of the White Stork Synagogue in Wrocław’.

The aim of the project is to celebrate 190 years of the White Stork Synagogue, an important place in Wrocław. The first prayers in this building took place in April 1829.
As a part of the celebrations we plan to open an exhibition about the history of the Old Synagogue and its role in the Jewish community, as well as the people connected with it.
After the closure and destruction in the post-war period, the synagogue reopened in 1995 to once again become house of worship, as well as a unique cultural centre. The Foundation would like to share history of the Synagogue with the emphasis on the last 200 years. The aim is also to share respect between religions, fight anti-Semitism and xenophobia, as well as integrate members of the local community by acquiring knowledge about Jews from Wrocław and their house of worship.
The celebrations will be a part of the 21st edition of the Festival of Jewish Culture SIMCHA.
Film screenings and lectures about the history and traditions of Jews from Wrocław will be a part of the event.
