Cataloguing matzevahs from the former Jewish cemetery in Widawa

Grant for Association of the Center for Jewish Studies for cataloguing matzevahs from the former Jewish cemetery in Widawa

The Jewish cemetery in Widawa was destroyed during World War II; until recently only a single grave marker remained in place. Matzevahs from the wartime and postwar periods were used as building materials in and around the town – including in a sidewalk around the mill in Wola Kleszczowa, from which 138 matzevahs were recovered and transported to the Widawa cemetery grounds in 2020. As part of the project, Stowarzyszenie Centrum Badań Żydowskich (the Association of the Center for Jewish Studies) plans to catalog the matzevahs, publishing a list with photos and translations of their inscriptions.
