Kurów residents commemorated the Jewish community of their town by creating a place of remembrance dedicated to the Jews who were deported in 1942 to the Sobibór death camp and the Kurów citizens who hid Jews in an effort to save them. The town’s mayor emphasized the significance of the monument during the unveiling: “This commemoration was very important for us. This year is the 75th anniversary of these dramatic events, when 2,500 Jews from Kurów, our neighbors, were deported by the Germans to death camps. Jews made up over half the residents of Kurów before the war.”
