Renovation of the tombstone of Chilus (Yekhiel) Mendelssohn

Grant for the municipality of Pszczyna for the renovation of the tombstone of Chilus aka Jechiel Mendelssohn

Renovation of the tombstone of Chilus (Yekhiel) Mendelssohn in Pszczyna in Upper Silesia, a project of the Municipality of Pszczyna, brings back the memory of this forgotten figure. This Lublin rabbi was a social and religious activist who in 1890, already in poor health, moved to Pszczyna, where he lived out his final days. Today the only physical trace of Mendelssohn is his ruined tombstone, bearing this sentence: “His community and the sons of his country counted him among the greatest of their people. He was counted by his people as a seedling among fine cedars.”
