The cemetery in Oświęcim was almost completely destroyed during the war. After it ended, thanks to the efforts of a handful of Survivors, only some of the matzevahs were restored to the cemetery. One of the remnants of the war period is a concrete bunker. In 2023, the concept was developed of converting it into a commemorative/ educational project, the Bunker of Memory. On its walls the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation placed 36 fragments of gravestones that had been preserved. The installation/lapidarium is a continuation of earlier activities around the bunker, and additional matzevahs found during the cleanup work at the cemetery will be set in concrete plinths.
