Under Pressure: What those we silence say about the Holocaust

Grant for publishing Tomasz Żukowski book “Under Pressure: What those we silence say about the Holocaust”

Tomasz Żukowski, Under Pressure: What those we silence say about the Holocaust (Wielka Litera) addresses difficulties in confronting the Holocaust in Poland. We are witnessing efforts to suppress discussion of the Holocaust. With increasing knowledge of the reality, questions about the participation of Polish society in the German genocidal efforts arise. In response, narratives defending an idealized Polish self-image become ever stronger. This deadlock has its roots in a culture of exclusion that shapes the majority’s story about itself (confirming its superiority) and the discreet silence of the subordinated minority.
